Paul Scholes gave Manchester United the early lead in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.

The veteran midfielder seized on a loose ball outside the area to smash the ball beyond the grasp of goalkeeper Victor Valdes (14).

United had made a cagey start to the match prior to the goal as the dangerous Lionel Messi produced some probing forward runs for the visitors.
