Zico: Kazim Richards has big future

Colin Kazim-Richards has been tipped for a bright future with Fenerbahce and Turkey, after putting a dent in Chelsea’s Champions League hopes.

Avram Grant’s men were in total control at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, before Kazim-Richards came off the bench and levelled the quarter-final first leg.

Deivid, who had scored an own goal in the first half, then grabbed a spectacular winner to leave Chelsea needing victory next week at Stamford Bridge.

The 2-1 result was sweet for London-born Kazim-Richards, who was at Sheffield United until the end of last season before moving to Fenerbahce just after he won his first Turkey cap.

“He will contribute a lot to Fenerbahce and the Turkish national team,” said Fenerbahce boss Zico.

“Colin is getting used to the team and our play slowly. He is a quality player. When he can handle the adapting problems he has had he will be a great asset. That is what I’m trying to help him with.”

Chelsea boss Grant was left frustrated but still feels his team are in a position to reach their fourth semi-final in five years.

They got off to the perfect start when Deivid sliced into his own net from Florent Malouda’s cross; then Didier Drogba missed three opportunities to add to the scoring before the break.

Michael Essien also struck the bar, but Chelsea were eventually made to pay for being wasteful.

“We played good football and deserved to be 3-0 or 4-0 up,” said Grant.

“Then one slip, and they are back in the game. Normally it is a great result when you score away - but because of our performance, I’m very disappointed.”

The slip came in the 64th minute when Ricardo Carvalho lost Kazim-Richards, and the forward smashed past Carlo Cudicini. Deivid found the top corner from 35 yards nine minutes from full-time.

“We talked about it at half-time, about the chances we threw away,” added Grant.

“We needed to score more goals and didn’t do it. This is football - one minute you are sleeping, then they equalise. It is a fact we lost, but the most important thing is to be in the next round. If we have that performance at home it will be good.”

Zico has spoken of his attacking philosophy but added: “Chelsea have to come forward to beat us in London. This is an advantage for us, because we also go looking for a goal.”
