The U.S. soccer team will play England in an exhibition game at Wembley on May 28.

The match is first between the nations since the English beat the United States 2-1 at Chicago’s Soldier Field on May 28, 2005.

“We have consistently said that one of our goals is to play matches against good opponents and in environments that will really challenge our team,” U.S. coach Bob Bradley said Wednesday.

“In addition to the quality of the English team, the tradition and passion for the sport in that country, the media focus, and the intensity of the fans all combine to make this a fantastic opportunity for our group.

“We are very pleased with the schedule we have put together to help us prepare for World Cup qualifying.”

England failed to qualify for the European Championship. The match could feature David Beckham making his 100th appearance for England.

After beating Sweden 2-0 and tying Mexico 2-2 in its first two games this year, the Americans play at Poland next Wednesday at Krakow and at Spain on June 4 at Santander. They also may host Argentina on June 8 at East Rutherford, N.J.

The United States opens World Cup qualifying against Barbados or Dominica on June 15 at Carson, Calif.
