Foster set for surprise England recall

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster is set for a dramatic England recall today.

Foster has played only one game this season, but the decision to allow Manchester City’s Joe Hart turnout for the U21s suggests England boss Fabio Capello is ready to go with the United keeper for next week’s friendly against France.
Capello publicly bemoaned the fact that he felt forced to select a 37-year-old in David James and the position of goalkeeper clearly concerns him.
But the situation has improved. The highly-rated Foster is back, Chris Kirkland has been outstanding for Wigan and even Paul Robinson has regained his place at Tottenham. As a result, Scott Carson could be one of the casualties before Capello takes his squad to Paris on Tuesday.

Well Foster didn’t make it in in the end, which was a surprise. Capello’s named a provisional squad of 30 that will be cut down to 23 after the weekend’s games. Beckham’s back in and should get his 100th cap while Walcott has also been recalled for the first time since the 2006 World Cup. More surprisingly is that Robert Green and Paul Robinson were both also left out in favour of James, Kirkland and Carson while Wheater of Boro gets a chance too. Defoe deserves his call-up for 5 goals for Pompey while Owen and Crouch will probably be sweating of their places come the weekend.
Provisional squad:
Goalkeepers: James (Portsmouth), Carson (Aston Villa), Kirkland (Wigan)
Defenders: Bridge (Chelsea), A Cole (Chelsea), Johnson (Portsmouth), Terry (Chelsea), Brown (Man Utd), Lescott (Everton), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Wheater (Middlesbrough), Woodgate (Tottenham), Upson (West Ham)
Midfielders: Barry (Aston Villa), Young (Aston Villa), Bentley (Blackburn), J Cole (Chelsea), Lampard (Chelsea), Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Man Utd), Downing (Middlesbrough), Jenas (Tottenham)
Forwards: Walcott (Arsenal), Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Crouch (Liverpool), Rooney (Man Utd), Owen (Newcastle), Defoe (Portsmouth).
