FA refuse to revise Taylor ban

Fifa’s call for an extended ban for Birmingham defender Martin Taylor has been refused by the FA claiming it would be unreasonable to change disciplinary actions on one case.

The challenge that shocked everyone

Martin Taylor’s tackle (pictured right) on, Arsenal striker, Eduardo Da Silva on the day of the 2-2 draw earned him a red card and a three-match suspension. The tackle, that was labelled a horror challenge, not only shocked Taylor and Eduardo themselves but shocked the whole world, including Fifa.

Fifa chief of disciplinary action, Marcel Mathier, called for a revised ban, one that would preferably prevent challengs like the one on 23rd February happening again; however the FA have turned down possibilities of this happening claiming it is unreasonable. An FA spokesmen said: “It would be unreasonable at this stage of the season to change our disciplinary procedures on the basis of one case.”. They also mentioned that they will be revising the procedure for such a situation at the end of the season and will be making sure of a meeting with Fifa representatives.

Martin Taylor claims the tackle was mis-timed and made a point of visiting Eduardo, who will now miss Euro 2008, and qualifiers for the world cup with England, in hospital. It is now estimated that Eduardo could be out from a maximum time of 15 months.

Sepp Blatter’s shock at the tackle caused for him to take the case at a very personal view asking that it be taken to a hearing to prevent the re-occurence of such mishaps.

However, some are questioning whether the seriousness, and the view of Fifa being taken is due to the status of the player and club, if the same were to happen to parties not on the international front, would such a thing happen?
